So New York Summer

Summertime in New York City is unlike any other place on Earth. There is the immense heat, the unbearable humidity and those offensive aromas unlike anyplace on Earth, but there is also this energy, this excitement and pure adrenaline rush that comes with the city in these all too brief summer months. Maybe it's just me because I grew up in the city. I've never really wanted to live anyplace else but in New York City...unless you count Miami--where I threaten to move every winter.

The theme of this summer seems to be the Rooftops of New York. Twice this summer I've been invited to these hot like fire rooftop parties. Unlike your normal backyard barbeque, a rooftop party is usually a small portable grill, a cooler of beer and a view of the city that no postcard can quite capture. You get to meet interesting new people from all walks of life and discover that despite age, race and ethnicity, the differences are less common than one might imagine.

The first party was in Harlem and the most recent was in East Greenwich Village across from Tompkins Square Park. Classic soul music and frat party beer kegs were the highlights of each.

So what started out as lackluster is becoming a surprisingly fun-filled summer that will end in a mere 65 days. That's not very long, but another adventure is just waiting around the corner. It might be a blackout, it might be better or worse, but it won’t be dull and certainly won't cool down the baked apple.

That’s So New York.
